The world wants you to speed up. Hit the fall deadlines, keep the pace, push through. But your body is downshifting. Memories are surfacing. There’s a tiredness you can’t push through.
That pull inward isn’t you falling behind. It’s the season itself. And it’s asking you to pay attention.
What is Mabon?
Mabon is the fall equinox, and this year its window runs the 20th thru the 23rd. Day and night come into perfect balance, the divine feminine and masculine working in harmony, and that balance opens a portal of creation.
To feel why this moment matters, it helps to know the wheel of the year. For six months at a time, each primordial element is awake and supporting you. Then it wanes and goes to sleep. At Lughnasadh in August, air wanes, and you probably felt the first slowing. At Mabon, water wanes. Air and water are the two elements that move the current of time along. So when water goes to sleep, time itself slows down.
This is not a malfunction. It is the season downshifting, and you are made of the same elements, so you downshift with it.
The window of fate
Mabon is a window of fate: a short, potent opening where you get to weave your own next chapter instead of getting dragged along behind it.
Here is the relief in it. This is not the season for new beginnings. Those belong to spring. Right now you only have to reflect and release. The intentional version of this season is a much better ride than the one where it happens to you and you’re left wondering what just happened.
The honest harvest
Mabon is harvest time. Whatever seeds you planted in spring, whatever you nurtured through summer, now comes due.
But don’t rush past this part with a quick count-your-blessings and on to planning the next thing. The harvest asks a harder question: what did you actually plant, and what actually grew?
Look at it with no illusions, no judgment, no shame. Some fruit didn’t come because the time isn’t yet; the seed hasn’t found its right conditions. And some fruit didn’t come because the seed never went in the ground. You will not get an apple tree from a peach pit, and you will not get a harvest from a seed that stayed in the packet.
This honesty matters because knowledge is power. Seeing clearly what led to what is what lets you create more successfully next year.
The dead threads
Your life is a tapestry your soul is weaving. Most threads in it are alive, vibrant, humming. And then there are the dead ones: limp, muted, dangling off the edge of something already finished. A relationship that’s over. A version of you that doesn’t fit anymore. An obligation that stopped being yours a long time ago.
The days around Mabon are when the dead threads show themselves. Expect provocations and mirror moments. Someone says the thing and your whole body goes, oof. Don’t flinch and don’t fear it. That little hand mirror is being held up so you can see exactly which thread is done.
Write down what you notice. First pop, no second guessing. Then, inside the window, you release those threads for good. You become the weaver of your fate instead of the dead weight dragged behind the cart.
How to celebrate Mabon
Follow your own instincts first. But if you’re new to this or want a structure, here’s what I recommend:
- Pick a date, time, and place during the window. Stick to it.
- Choose one god or goddess to work with and activate them to help you plan. Say it three times: I activate you to help me plan my Mabon celebration, to honor Mother Earth, my soul path, and to release the dead threads.
- Choose three rituals. Three is the number of creation. A guided releasing meditation can be one of them.
- Invite Mother Earth, the land spirits, your gods and goddesses, and your ancestors to attend, and bring them an offering.
- Have the four elements present in some way.
- Solo is sacred. If you invite people, choose ones who are additive.
- Have fun. Dance around a fire if you can. Endings deserve celebration too.

Let the season teach you your rhythm
You are a child of this earth, made of the same elements that are shifting right now. When you ignore the season, you ignore your own rhythms, your own needs, your own strengths at different times of year.
Engage with it instead, and you come back into sync with the great cycle that holds you. Reflect. Release. Weave the next chapter on purpose.
That’s what Mabon is for.
